Can You See Who Viewed Your TikTok Story?

Updated · Tikvue Guides

Short answer

Yes. TikTok shows you exactly who viewed your story: open your active story and swipe up (or tap the view count) to see the list of accounts that watched it. It works the other way too, so when you watch someone else's story while logged in, your account shows up in their viewer list. The only way to watch without appearing is to not be logged in, for example with an anonymous story viewer.

Can you see who viewed your TikTok story?

Yes. TikTok stories come with a built-in viewer list: every logged-in account that watches your story is recorded, and you can see the names while the story is live. You don't need to turn anything on, unlike profile visits, which only appear when both people have opted in to profile view history. Stories last 24 hours, so that's the window you have to check.

That also answers the reverse question many people search for: does TikTok show who viewed your story to the person who posted it? It does. If you watch a story from your account, the creator can see your username and profile picture in their list. There's no setting that hides you from story viewer lists.

How to see who viewed your TikTok story

To see who viewed your TikTok story, open your active story from your profile and swipe up (or tap the view count) to open the viewer list. The steps are the same on iPhone and Android. Menu labels can shift slightly between app versions, but the flow has been stable for a while:

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap your profile picture. When you have an active story, it has a colored ring around it. You can also find your story in the row of stories some feeds and the Inbox show at the top, depending on your app version.
  3. Your story starts playing. Look at the bottom of the screen for the view count.
  4. Swipe up, or tap the view count, to open the list of viewers. You'll see each account's username and photo.
  5. If you posted several story clips, tap through them. Each clip has its own viewer list.

From the viewer list you can usually follow someone back or open their profile. If the list is long, scroll down to load more accounts.

Who appears in your story viewer list

The list includes anyone who watched the story while logged in to a TikTok account and who was allowed to see it:

  • Followers and friends. They see your stories at the top of their feeds, so they make up most viewers.
  • People who don't follow you. If your account is public, people who don't follow you can still watch your story, for example by visiting your profile. They appear in your list too.
  • Repeat viewers. Someone who watches your story five times usually shows up once. TikTok doesn't publicly display how many times each person watched.

Some views will never appear by name:

  • People watching from a browser without logging in.
  • People using an anonymous viewer tool, which loads the public story without any TikTok account.
  • Accounts you've blocked, since blocked accounts can't see your content at all.

This is why the view count can sometimes be slightly higher than the number of names you can see. The exact way TikTok counts anonymous views isn't documented publicly, so treat the count as a rough guide.

Can people see who viewed their TikTok story if you just look at the profile?

No. Simply landing on someone's profile doesn't mark their story as watched. Your name is added to the viewer list only when the story actually plays. Be careful, though: tapping a profile picture with a story ring opens the story immediately, and that counts as a view.

Visiting a profile can be recorded in a different way. If you and the other person both have profile view history turned on, your visit appears in their profile view list for 30 days. We explain that in detail in does TikTok show who viewed your profile.

How to view someone's TikTok story anonymously

To view someone's TikTok story anonymously, watch it without being logged in, for example with an anonymous story viewer. TikTok always records story views from logged-in accounts, so this is the only reliable way to stay out of the viewer list. You have a few options:

  1. Use an anonymous story viewer. Tikvue's TikTok story viewer loads a public account's active stories without a TikTok login. You type a username, and the stories play in your browser. Because no TikTok account is involved, there's nothing to add to the viewer list.
  2. Log out of TikTok in your browser. Stories aren't always easy to reach on the TikTok website without an account, and the site often pushes you to log in or open the app, so this approach is hit and miss.
  3. Use a second account. This hides your main account, but the second account still appears in the list. If the person knows it's you, it doesn't help much.

A few things to know before you try any anonymous viewer, ours included. It only works with public accounts. Stories from private accounts are visible only to approved followers, and no legitimate tool can get around that (see can you view a private TikTok account). And stories still expire after 24 hours, so if you want to keep one, save it with the TikTok story downloader while it's live.

Story views vs. profile views vs. video views

Only story views are always tied to your name. Profile views show your name only if both of you have profile view history on, and regular video views show creators totals, not names. People often mix up these three features, so here's what TikTok shows in each case:

What you viewDoes the creator see your name? Can you opt out?
A storyYes, in the story viewer listNo, only by not being logged in
A profileOnly if both of you have profile view history onYes, turn off profile view history
A regular videoNo, creators only see totals and analyticsNot needed

For regular videos, TikTok only reports aggregate numbers; there's more on that in can you see who views your TikTok videos.

Privacy tips for TikTok stories

  • Decide who your audience is. If you only want friends to see your stories, a private account is the simplest option. Only approved followers will see your posts and stories.
  • Remove or block unwanted viewers. If someone keeps appearing in your list and you don't want them there, removing them as a follower or blocking them stops them from watching.
  • Be careful what you tap. Profile pictures with a colored ring open a story straight away. If you don't want to show up, don't tap it while logged in.
  • Delete a story early if needed. You can remove a story before the 24 hours are up. Our TikTok stories guide covers posting, deleting and finding old stories.

Is there an app that shows who secretly viewed your story?

No. Some apps and websites claim to reveal hidden viewers or people who watched anonymously. They can't. TikTok only exposes viewer data inside your own account, and views from logged-out visitors aren't tied to anyone. Apps making these promises often ask for your TikTok password, which puts your account at risk. Never give your login to a third-party service.

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok notify someone when I watch their story?

No. TikTok doesn't send a notification for each story view. Your account simply appears in the viewer list, which the creator can open at any time while the story is live.

If I turn off profile view history, am I hidden from story viewer lists?

No. Profile view history and story views are separate. Turning off profile view history only affects profile visits. Story views are still recorded for any logged-in account.

Can I see who viewed my story after it expires?

Generally not in a reliable way. Stories last 24 hours, and the viewer list is tied to the live story. Check your viewers before the story disappears if you want to know who watched.

Will someone know if I watch their story with Tikvue?

No. Tikvue never logs in to TikTok with your account, so there is nothing linking the view to you. It only works for stories posted by public accounts.

Can I hide my stories from specific people?

Yes, by making your account private, removing followers or blocking specific accounts. A private account only shows stories to approved followers.
