What is TikTok engagement rate?

TikTok engagement rate is the share of people who interact with a video (like, comment or share) compared with how many saw it or how many follow the account. It's the standard way to compare accounts of different sizes: a creator with fewer followers but a higher engagement rate often has a more active audience.

There are two common formulas, and this calculator shows both:

  • Engagement rate by views = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. It measures how compelling the videos are to the people who watched them.
  • Engagement rate by followers = average (likes + comments + shares) per video ÷ followers × 100. It's the formula many influencer marketing reports use.

Because TikTok shows most videos to people who don't follow the creator, the two numbers can differ a lot. A single viral video can push the follower-based rate past 100%, while the view-based rate stays in a normal range. Saves aren't counted, to match the most common formula.

To look through the videos behind the numbers, open the profile in the anonymous TikTok viewer.

Frequently asked questions

How is TikTok engagement rate calculated?

Engagement rate by views is (likes + comments + shares) divided by views, across the account's recent videos. Engagement rate by followers is the average likes + comments + shares per video divided by the follower count. Both are shown as a percentage.

Which engagement rate should I use?

Use engagement rate by views to judge how well videos hold the audience that actually saw them, since most TikTok views come from the For You feed rather than followers. Use the follower-based rate to compare accounts the way many brands and agencies do.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

There's no official benchmark. Rates vary a lot by niche, account size and how a video was distributed, and published industry figures use different formulas. The most useful comparison is an account against its own past videos and against similar accounts measured the same way.

How many videos does the calculator use?

It uses up to the 20 most recent public videos on the profile. Videos without view counts are skipped.

Can I calculate the engagement rate of a private account?

No. Private accounts hide their videos and video statistics, so only the follower and like totals are visible.

Does the account owner see that I checked their engagement?

No. Tikvue reads public statistics without logging in to TikTok, so nothing is linked to your account and the creator isn't notified.
